Books Written by Gary Zukav

Gary Zukav wrote a book about quantum physics for people who know no physics, and it won a National Book Award. Ten years later he wrote a book about the soul, and it spent nearly three years on the bestseller list after Oprah Winfrey invited him onto her show more than thirty times. Those two books are so different that readers often arrive at one without knowing the other exists. This guide covers all eight of his books in order, the companion volumes around them, and where to start.

Quick answer

Gary Zukav has written eight books. His best known is The Seat of the Soul (1989), a number one New York Times bestseller that stayed on the list for close to three years; his first was The Dancing Wu Li Masters (1979), an introduction to quantum physics that won the National Book Award for Science. The rest, in order, are Soul Stories (2000), The Heart of the Soul (2001), The Mind of the Soul (2003), Soul to Soul (2007), Spiritual Partnership (2010) and Universal Human (2021). Three were co-written with his partner, Linda Francis. Start with The Seat of the Soul.

Where to Start with Gary Zukav

If you read only one
→ The Seat of the Soul (1989). Everything else assumes it.

If you want something to practise
→ The Heart of the Soul (2001), then The Mind of the Soul (2003).

If relationships are why you came
→ Spiritual Partnership (2010).

If you came for the physics
→ The Dancing Wu Li Masters (1979), and read it on its own terms.

The Dancing Wu Li Masters

An Overview of the New Physics

Gary Zukav · 1979 · National Book Award for Science

An explanation of quantum mechanics, relativity and particle physics for readers with no background in either science or mathematics, built on analogies rather than equations and on the parallels Zukav saw between the new physics and Eastern mysticism. He wrote it with extensive help from the physicist Jack Sarfatti and others he met through him, after an Esalen conference on quantum theory. It won the National Book Award for Science in 1980.

Read it as a period piece as much as a physics primer. The science holds up better than the mysticism, and it is still one of the clearest introductions to quantum theory written for a general reader.

Spirituality · His best known

The Seat of the SoulStart here

Gary Zukav · 1989

The book that made him a household name. Zukav argues that humanity is evolving from a five-sensory species, which pursues external power, into a multisensory one, which pursues what he calls authentic power: the alignment of the personality with the soul. He introduces the vocabulary his later books all rest on, including authentic power, spiritual partnership and reverence. It reached number one on the New York Times bestseller list and stayed on that list for close to three years, helped by more than thirty appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show from 1998.

Start here, because everything after it assumes you have read it. Be aware what you are getting: this is a spiritual framework presented as fact, not an argued case.

Soul Stories

Gary Zukav · 2000

The ideas of The Seat of the Soul shown at work in real lives rather than explained in the abstract: short stories about harmony, cooperation, sharing and reverence, many of them from his own life. A New York Times bestseller.

The easiest of his books to read, and the one to try if the abstraction of The Seat of the Soul put you off.

Emotions · With Linda Francis

The Heart of the Soul

Emotional Awareness

Gary Zukav · 2001

Written with his partner Linda Francis, this is the practical follow-up: how to notice what you are feeling, where in the body you feel it, and what those sensations are telling you. Its premise is that emotional awareness is the entry point to everything the earlier book describes.

The most useful of his books if you want something to practise rather than something to believe.

Choice · With Linda Francis

The Mind of the Soul

Responsible Choice

Gary Zukav · 2003

The third in the sequence with Linda Francis, about choosing your response rather than reacting automatically, and about the consequences that follow from each choice. A New York Times bestseller, published alongside a companion workbook.

Read it straight after The Heart of the Soul: the two were designed as a pair.

Questions & answers

Soul to Soul

Communications from the Heart

Gary Zukav · 2007

Short answers to the questions readers kept sending him about love, fear, health, money, children and death. Less a developed argument than a collection of responses, each a page or two long.

Dip into it rather than reading it through. It works best as something to open at random.

Spiritual Partnership

The Journey to Authentic Power

Gary Zukav · 2010

His first major book after The Seat of the Soul, on the idea he had introduced there: partnership between equals for the purpose of spiritual growth, rather than for security or comfort. He sets out what he calls the four commitments and offers practical guidance for applying them.

The one to read if relationships are why you came. It is also the most concrete of his later books.

Universal HumanNewest

Creating Authentic Power and the New Consciousness

Gary Zukav · 2021

Written more than thirty years after The Seat of the Soul, this is his account of where that evolution has arrived: a species choosing between love and fear, and what he calls the universal human, someone who no longer identifies with nation, race or religion. His most recent book.

For readers who are already convinced. It restates the framework rather than developing it.

The Physics Book and the Soul Books

His work falls into two parts that barely resemble each other, and readers usually find one without knowing the other exists.

  • The physics book — The Dancing Wu Li Masters (1979), an award-winning introduction to quantum theory for non-scientists. Read the entry →
  • The soul books — the seven that follow, beginning with The Seat of the Soul (1989) and all built on the same framework of authentic power. Read the entries →
  • Written with Linda Francis — The Heart of the Soul (2001), The Mind of the Soul (2003) and the workbooks around them. They are the most practical of his work.

In What Order to Read Gary Zukav

The seven spiritual books are cumulative: each one assumes the vocabulary of the one before, and starting in the middle means meeting terms like authentic power and multisensory without their definitions. The physics book stands entirely apart and can be read whenever you like.

How Gary Zukav Writes: One Framework, Restated

Zukav writes in short declarative sentences and short chapters, with almost no hedging. That is the appeal and also the objection. Readers who find him transformative describe a book that says plainly what they already suspected; readers who bounce off him point out that the claims about souls, reincarnation and multisensory perception are presented as established fact rather than as a belief system being argued for.

What is worth knowing is how much of his later work is one idea. The Seat of the Soul sets out the framework, and the six books after it apply it: to stories, to emotions, to choice, to questions from readers, to relationships, and finally to humanity as a whole. If the framework does not persuade you, none of the later books will change that; if it does, they give you somewhere to take it.

His first book is the outlier, and it is worth reading on its own terms. The Dancing Wu Li Masters was written with real help from working physicists and it explains quantum mechanics with unusual clarity. The parallels it draws between physics and Eastern mysticism were contested by physicists then and are still contested now, so read the explanation and treat the mysticism as the author's own.

Frequently asked questions about Gary Zukav's books

How many books has Gary Zukav written?

Eight: The Dancing Wu Li Masters (1979), The Seat of the Soul (1989), Soul Stories (2000), The Heart of the Soul (2001), The Mind of the Soul (2003), Soul to Soul (2007), Spiritual Partnership (2010) and Universal Human (2021). He also published four companion volumes of meditations and exercises, which is why some lists count more.

What are Gary Zukav's books in order?

In order of publication: The Dancing Wu Li Masters (1979), The Seat of the Soul (1989), Soul Stories (2000), The Heart of the Soul (2001), The Mind of the Soul (2003), Soul to Soul (2007), Spiritual Partnership (2010), Universal Human (2021).

Which Gary Zukav book should I read first?

The Seat of the Soul (1989). It sets out the framework, including the ideas of authentic power and multisensory perception, that every book after it assumes. If you would rather start with something more concrete, Soul Stories (2000) tells the same ideas through people's lives.

What is The Seat of the Soul about?

It argues that humanity is evolving from a five-sensory species, which pursues external power over others and over circumstances, into a multisensory one, which pursues authentic power: the alignment of the personality with the soul. Zukav introduces the vocabulary his later books rest on, including spiritual partnership, intention and reverence.

What is Gary Zukav's newest book?

Universal Human: Creating Authentic Power and the New Consciousness, published by Atria Books in 2021.

Did Gary Zukav write a book about physics?

Yes, his first. The Dancing Wu Li Masters: An Overview of the New Physics (1979) explains quantum mechanics, relativity and particle physics for readers with no scientific background, and won the National Book Award for Science in 1980. He wrote it with extensive help from physicists he met through Jack Sarfatti after an Esalen conference.

Is The Dancing Wu Li Masters scientifically accurate?

The explanations of quantum mechanics and relativity are generally considered clear and sound for a lay reader. The parallels the book draws between modern physics and Eastern mysticism are a separate matter: they were contested by physicists when the book appeared and remain contested. Read the physics as physics and the mysticism as the author's own framing.

Which Gary Zukav books did he write with Linda Francis?

Three of the eight, plus two companions: The Heart of the Soul (2001), The Mind of the Soul (2003), Thoughts from the Heart of the Soul (2002) and The Self-Empowerment Journal (2003). Francis was his partner from 1993 and co-founded the Seat of the Soul Institute with him; she died in 2022.

What is authentic power, according to Gary Zukav?

Authentic power is his term for the alignment of the personality with the soul: acting from love rather than from fear, and from intention rather than reaction. He contrasts it with external power, the ability to manipulate or control others and circumstances, which he argues no longer serves human evolution.

Why is Gary Zukav associated with Oprah Winfrey?

From 1998 he appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show more than thirty times to discuss The Seat of the Soul and the ideas in it. Those appearances turned a book published nine years earlier into a number one bestseller that stayed on the New York Times list for close to three years.

Who is Gary Zukav?

Gary Zukav is an American author, born in Port Arthur, Texas, on October 17, 1942. He studied international relations at Harvard and served as a US Army Special Forces officer in Vietnam before turning to writing. He lives in Ashland, Oregon, and co-founded the Seat of the Soul Institute in 1998.

How old is Gary Zukav?

He was born on 17 October 1942 in Port Arthur, Texas, so he turns 84 in October 2026.

Where is Gary Zukav now?

He lives in Ashland, Oregon, where he moved in 2000, and still teaches through the Seat of the Soul Institute, which he co-founded with Linda Francis in 1998. His most recent book is Universal Human (2021).

Is Gary Zukav married?

He was married to Linda Francis, whom he met in 1993. She co-wrote three of his books, co-founded the Seat of the Soul Institute with him and appeared beside him on Super Soul Sunday in 2012. Linda Francis died in 2022.

Are Gary Zukav's books religious?

They are spiritual rather than religious: he does not write from within a particular tradition and does not ask readers to adopt one. His framework does assume souls, reincarnation and a purpose to human evolution, and presents these as fact rather than as belief, which some readers find liberating and others find hard to accept.

What religion is Gary Zukav?

He does not write as a member of any religion, Christian or otherwise, and his books do not ask readers to join one. What he teaches is a spiritual framework of his own, built on souls, reincarnation and the idea of authentic power. In Universal Human he describes a person who no longer identifies with nation, race or religion.

How does Gary Zukav know what he knows about the soul?

He does not claim scientific proof. He presents the soul, reincarnation and multisensory perception as insight from his own experience rather than as the result of research, and asks readers to test the ideas against their own lives instead of taking them on his authority. Whether that convinces you is the main dividing line among his readers.
