Books Written by Shelby Van Pelt

In 2013, living in Atlanta after years as a litigation consultant, Shelby Van Pelt took a fiction course at Emory University. One assignment asked for a story told from an “unusual perspective”, and she chose a giant Pacific octopus, the animal she had watched as a child at the Point Defiance Aquarium in Tacoma. The octopus became Marcellus, most of the novel was written in 2020, and Remarkably Bright Creatures came out in May 2022. It has sold more than four million copies and in 2026 became a Netflix film with Sally Field. It is still her only book. This guide covers her one key book, in order, and where to begin.

How to Read Shelby Van Pelt

There is one book, and it reads straight through. The chapters rotate between Tova, Cameron and Marcellus, and the octopus’s short first-person chapters are where the reader learns what the people have not yet put together.

If you want to hear her on how it was made, her Literary Hub essay “Lessons Learned from a Year Listening to the Fictional Octopus in My Head” appeared on publication day in May 2022. The Netflix film (2026) is best watched after the book.

How Shelby Van Pelt Writes: An Octopus Among the Narrators

The novel turns on one decision: giving part of the narration to an animal, in the first person. Marcellus is a giant Pacific octopus near the end of his short life who regards the aquarium as a prison and the visitors with contempt. His behaviour is taken from real captive octopuses Van Pelt had watched in online videos — “Escaping the tank, collecting objects, having very strong preferences for particular people,” as she told KUOW in 2026.

Around him the book is small-town realism with rotating points of view, Tova’s and Cameron’s, and a mystery the reader can solve before the characters do. Its subject is grief that has gone on for decades: “I wanted to write about what it’s like to live with grief,” she has said, “not what it’s like when it’s fresh.” Tova is most directly inspired by her Swedish grandmother.

Sowell Bay is invented, but the setting is the Puget Sound of her Tacoma childhood. For novelists who write warmly about lonely, stubborn people, from Fredrik Backman to Rachel Joyce, see Authors like Shelby Van Pelt.
